Bulbine is a native plant to Australia but is easily grown in the temperatures of Austin, TX and actually thrives in the Austin climate. Bulbine is similar to a succulent, with it's fleshy like leaves and beautiful flowers which are usually yellow in color but sometimes orange. Because of its succulent nature, it can be placed in a garden or in landscaping with relative ease by seed or by plant division. Most commonly used in rock gardens and as a potted plant, Bulbine grows long spear like leaves and bloom with flowers that are star shaped in appearance and fragrant as opposed to many other succulent plants. They require very little water and need only be trimmed when flowering stalks begin declining, just look at the flowering stalk for a clue of when the flowering will stop and trim accordingly. With frequent trimming of the flowering stalk, Bulbine will produce more flowers. Look for it by the names of Golden Lily, Leek Lily and Yellow Onion weed in your local garden center. This is a great plant for sharing with friends because it is so easy to divide and pass along.

My daugther’s nickname is Sage, so it’s a pretty popular flower and herb in our home. You can imagine the jokes she makes about “eating me!” Aside from the herb, however, one of our favorite versions of sage is the blue sage flower, which is quite lovely.
