The best place to begin your search for flowers in Austin, Texas is by becoming friends of the Travis County Master Gardener’s Association. This group is composed of members who live, work and enjoy the quality of life in this South Texas city. Flowers are certainly part of the quality of life in Austin. The city is surrounded by colorful and vibrant wildflowers – as is all of South Texas – and some of the most beautiful flowers in the country are cultivated within the city limits.
The members of the Travis County Master Gardener’s Association – like many similar organizations throughout the United States – are local community volunteers in Austin with a special interest in all things horticultural. They have 50 hours of special training at Texas A&M AgriLife Extension as well as a history of practical application and a consuming interest in learning as much as possible in the horticultural field. The course of study includes lawn care; ornamental trees and shrubs; insect, disease, and weed management; soils and plant nutrition; vegetable gardening; home fruit production; garden flowers and water conservation. More importantly, they have a desire to share their knowledge with others.
Austin association members dedicate their time and effort to participating in a comprehensive and ongoing training program. The best ongoing training originates from the many different issues, questions and problems that they study and address during their tenure as volunteers.
Participants are obligated to dedicate at least 50 hours of volunteer service in the year following the training course. At the end of their successful volunteer period they are awarded the title of “Texas Master Gardener”.
The volunteers are dedicated to assisting gardeners throughout the state with any type of horticultural issues: Free of charge.
